Energy as the foundation for essential services.

In crisis-affected and resource-constrained settings, access to energy underpins essential services — from water supply and food systems to agricultural production, health, and environmental protection. Yet energy is often treated as a technical add-on rather than a foundational system.

Emergency Energy addresses this gap by advancing clean energy as an enabler of humanitarian and development services through a Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus perspective. Energy systems are deeply interconnected with water access, food systems, ecological conditions, and social institutions — and humanitarian and development interventions must account for these relationships to be effective and sustainable.

We work at the intersection of applied research, systems analysis, and practice. Through the WEFEX project, our focus has sharpened around clean energy as a foundation, food security, small-scale farming and climate-smart agricultural practices, and data intelligence specifically focused on the WEFE nexus.

Emergency Energy works to advance clean energy as a foundation for effective humanitarian and development action — focusing on how energy systems enable essential services across the WEFE nexus.

Our core identity: a humanitarian and development energy systems organization that generates knowledge, translates it into usable tools, and develops scalable models — working with implementing partners rather than duplicating implementation.

We focus particularly on food security, small-scale farming, climate-smart agricultural practices, and environmental protection in crisis-affected and resource-constrained settings. Our three functions reinforce each other: evidence informs translation; translation strengthens models; models generate new evidence.

We conduct and support applied research on humanitarian and development energy systems — examining how clean energy interventions interact with water, food, ecosystems, and social institutions. This includes collaboration with academic partners and journals to strengthen the evidence base.

We apply a systems-based approach to humanitarian and development energy, grounded in the WEFE nexus. We emphasize understanding local systems before proposing solutions — analyzing social, ecological, and agricultural contexts to identify leverage points, trade-offs, and synergies across sectors.

WEFEX — the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems Exchange — is the operational brand of the WEFE Nexus Global Observatory (WNGO). It is an integrated, sensor-driven platform that monitors, analyzes, and helps optimize agricultural systems in real time, supporting climate-smart farming practices.

Why WEFEX is needed

Agricultural systems, particularly in water-stressed regions, face increasing pressure from climate variability, resource scarcity, and inefficiencies in irrigation and farm management. Small-scale farmers — who form the backbone of many agricultural economies — often lack access to real-time, actionable data.

WEFEX addresses this gap with continuous monitoring and data-driven insights that improve water use efficiency, crop health, and overall productivity, while strengthening resilience to climate impacts.

The architecture is defined and pilot nodes are being deployed in Morocco and Portugal. From there, WEFEX is intended to expand across the Mediterranean, with a long-term vision of scaling into a global network of interconnected observatories — adaptable across different geographies, crop types, and farming practices.

How WEFEX works

WEFEX operates through a multi-layered architecture that combines distributed field hardware, a flexible communication layer, and a cloud-based analytics and visualization stack — built on open-source tools and designed for interoperability and scalability.

A core standard across the network is the use of the Raspberry Pi as the local edge hub, providing consistent processing, local data aggregation, and compatibility with open-source tools such as MQTT, InfluxDB, and Grafana. Sensor types and communication methods remain adaptable to site-specific needs.

Sensing layer

Soil moisture, temperature, and EC at multiple depths; well levels and irrigation events; weather and climate variables; and camera-based visual / AI monitoring.

Communication layer

Agri-IoT communication via LoRaWAN, ESP32 WiFi, and other wireless or wired protocols — adapting to local regulatory standards and farm conditions.

Data & analytics layer

Data stored in InfluxDB, processed and visualized through Grafana dashboards, and integrated with cloud infrastructure.

AI layer

Advanced analytics for plant health monitoring, irrigation optimization, anomaly detection, and yield prediction.

Through WEFEX, we extend this partnership model to farmer-partners directly. WEFEX operates as a co-creation platform: participants contribute data and field knowledge, and receive tools, services, and insights in return.
